Initially starting out as a recording artist, Spacek transitioned into acting after her record sales floundered. Her breakout role in Badlands in 1973 made her highly sought-after. Her most iconic role, however, was in Carrie, in 1976. Her portrayal of the telepathic yet troubled character got her an Oscar nomination and made her an icon of the horror genre. She won her first Oscar in 1980 for her performance in Coal Miner’s Daughter.
